What Actually Happens at a Licensed Psilocybin Healing Center
A plain-language walkthrough of a regulated psilocybin session, from booking the consult to the day after.
Before you book
Most service centers and healing centers ask you to fill out a screening form covering medical history (especially cardiovascular conditions and personal/family history of psychotic disorders), current medications (SSRIs and lithium are important), and what you are hoping to work on. Some conditions are exclusionary; others mean you'll be asked to coordinate with your prescriber.
For the legal frame around these sessions, see Oregon Measure 109 and Colorado Prop. 122.
The preparation session
This is a one-on-one conversation with a licensed facilitator, usually 60–90 minutes, in person or virtual. You'll discuss:
- Your intention or focus for the session.
- What the experience tends to feel like physically and emotionally.
- The boundaries of physical contact and what consent looks like during the session.
- Safety protocols and how the facilitator will support you.
The administration session
On session day, you'll arrive at the center, settle in, and consume a measured dose. You'll spend most of the next 4–6 hours lying down with eyeshades and music, with your facilitator quietly present. A typical Oregon dose is somewhere between 20 and 35 mg of psilocybin (substantial). Colorado healing centers offer comparable ranges; micro-healing-center tiers may cap dosing.
You will not be left alone. You can pause, ask questions, get water, or use the restroom at any time.
After the session
Most centers require a brief check-in before they let you leave. You should not drive home — arrange a ride. Sleep, hydrate, and keep your schedule light for the next day.
Integration
Integration is the process of making sense of what came up. Many centers offer a follow-up session a few days later. Journaling, gentle movement, time outdoors, and talking with a trusted person all help. If you are working with a therapist, loop them in.
What it costs and why
Regulated sessions are expensive — typically $1,500–$3,500 — because they include the facilitator's time across all three stages, the licensed setting, the cost-of-goods on tested psilocybin, and the state licensing overhead. Insurance does not currently cover it.

Questions & answers
4 answeredThe most common questions we hear on this topic.
How long does a session take from arrival to leaving?
Plan for 6–8 hours on site. The acute experience is typically 4–6 hours, plus an arrival/settle-in window and a post-session check-in before you can leave.
Do I need to stop taking my SSRI?
Often, yes — SSRIs blunt psilocybin's effects and the facilitator will want a coordinated taper with your prescriber. Lithium is a hard contraindication due to seizure risk. Do not stop a psychiatric medication on your own.
Can I bring a friend or partner?
Most centers allow a support person for arrival and pickup, but not in the room during the administration session. Ask the center directly when you book.
What if I have a panic moment during the session?
Facilitators are trained to support difficult passages — slowing your breath, offering grounding touch only with prior consent, or simply staying present. Most challenging moments resolve when you stop resisting and the facilitator helps you settle.
