Mushroom Dosage: What the Numbers Actually Mean
Microdose, museum dose, full dose, heroic dose — what each range means for psilocybin and Amanita, and why potency varies so much.
Why dosage is the most-searched mushroom question
Because the product is inconsistent. Two dried caps from the same flush can differ in psilocybin content by a factor of two or more, and commercial Amanita products vary even more widely. Numbers below are commonly cited reference ranges for dried Psilocybe cubensis, not prescriptions — and only a licensed session gives you a lab-tested, measured dose.
Psilocybin reference ranges (dried Psilocybe cubensis)
- Microdose — 0.05–0.25 g: sub-perceptual. Not intended to be noticeable. Evidence for benefit is genuinely mixed; see below.
- Museum dose — 0.5–1 g: mild. Color enhancement, mood lift, functional.
- Moderate — 1–2.5 g: the common "full" range. Clear perceptual changes, emotional intensity, 4–6 hours.
- Strong — 2.5–5 g: substantial ego dissolution likely. Not something to do alone or unprepared.
- Heroic — 5 g+: a term popularized by Terence McKenna. Overwhelming, unpredictable, and the range where difficult experiences cluster.
Licensed Oregon and Colorado sessions typically administer in the moderate-to-strong range, measured by psilocybin content rather than by mushroom weight — a far more reliable approach than weighing dried material.
Amanita muscaria is a completely different scale
Amanita is dosed by muscimol content, not by psilocybin equivalence, and comparing the two by grams is meaningless. Commercial products commonly list 250–500 mg of Amanita extract per gummy with muscimol stated separately. Ibotenic acid content matters too: it is the main driver of nausea, and careful producers convert it to muscimol before manufacturing. Start with a fraction of a single unit.
Factors that change the same dose
- Body chemistry and tolerance — tolerance builds fast and resets over roughly two weeks.
- Empty stomach — faster, stronger onset.
- SSRIs and other medications — can blunt effects substantially, and some combinations (MAOIs, lithium, tramadol) are genuinely dangerous.
- Set and setting — has a larger effect on the character of the experience than a 0.5 g difference in dose.
On microdosing
Several blinded, placebo-controlled studies have found that expectancy accounts for much of the reported mood and focus benefit of psilocybin microdosing. That does not mean nothing happens; it means the evidence is weaker than the internet suggests. If you microdose, keep a written log and re-evaluate honestly.
The safest version of this question
If dosing precision matters to you — and it should — a licensed session is the only route in the U.S. with lab-tested product and a measured dose. Never mix mushrooms with alcohol, never dose alone at a strong level, and never take anything from an unlabeled package.
Questions & answers
5 answeredThe most common questions we hear on this topic.
How many grams of mushrooms is a normal dose?
Commonly cited reference ranges for dried Psilocybe cubensis put a moderate dose at 1–2.5 g, a mild 'museum' dose at 0.5–1 g, and a microdose at 0.05–0.25 g. Potency varies widely between batches.
What is a microdose of mushrooms?
Roughly 0.05–0.25 g of dried mushroom — a sub-perceptual amount. Controlled studies suggest much of the reported benefit is driven by expectation.
How much Amanita muscaria should I take?
Dose by the muscimol content printed on the product, not by weight comparison with psilocybin. Start with a fraction of one unit; effects and nausea vary sharply between products.
Do antidepressants affect mushroom dosage?
Yes. SSRIs and SNRIs can substantially blunt effects, and some drugs — MAOIs, lithium, tramadol — create genuinely dangerous interactions. Discuss medications with a facilitator or clinician.
How long does a mushroom dose last?
Psilocybin effects typically begin in 20–60 minutes, peak around 2 hours, and resolve in 4–6 hours, with some residual effects afterward. Licensed sessions are scheduled for the full duration.
